This section takes a look at how bluffing is such an important part of poker. Learning how to do this and also when the right time to bluff is can win you a great deal more hands. Over-bluffing can cause you problems though, because other players will quickly figure out what you are doing. Therefore you must try to bluff in moderation.
Occasionally you will need to show your cards, for example when you go to a showdown. However the best advice for players is, where possible to hardly ever reveal your cards. After playing for a while and learning poker etiquette, you should naturally learn when it's suitable to show your hand.
If the cash pot isn't too large and you are trying to give off the wrong message to you opponent or to other players around the table, you will occasionally need to lose a winning hand in poker to feign your opponent. You must try to trick your opponent(s) in such a way that it isn't obvious what you are trying to do. Your opponent (and perhaps other who are still in the hand) will then be under the assumption that you are a weak player and they will then try to exploit you, which is where you can catch them out.
Your opponents will almost certainly be setting traps for you to fall into, so you must also set traps to catch them. Losing a winning hand is occasionally one of those dirty tricks that you will need to implement. Try to concentrate on how others play their game because when you get to a showdown with one or more of them, you will see what kind of hand they had and you will see how they played it. Try to remember exactly how they played that hand because this knowledge is vital.
You can learn a lot from other players when they reveal their cards. You can then use this information to gauge how they viewed the strength of that particular hand. Over time, you can also use this knowledge to see how often they bluff. Be careful though because they could be playing the same dirty tricks as you. This is why poker is such an exciting game that requires just as much skill as it does luck, but above all, concentration.
You could occasionally play as though you have a worse hand than you actually have. This is one great way of feigning your opponent. Just remember not to over-bet, but at the same time you don't want to make it look too obvious that you are trying to reel them in by placing insignificantly low bets.
You may have an awesome hand when the flop comes out, but if you aren't betting enough chips your opponent could end up with the better hand than you as the hand progresses. This is why betting the right amount at each betting round is of great importance.
You may have 'The Nuts' (the best possible hand) while playing against a player that has an aggressive style of play. This is what poker enthusiasts live for. Let the player think that he or she is in control (by letting them 'bully' you), right the way down to the river.
Take your time, but not too much time over your decision making and perhaps just call at each new betting round. You could even raise big when the river comes out, which will make your opponent think that you are just bluffing, meaning that he or she will then call, or better still, they will re-raise where you then call and turn over your winning hand. Alternatively, they will realise that you have been bluffing all along and will throw down their hand. Either way, you win.
